In 1799, Napoléon Bonaparte declares himself emperor and for a while France becomes an empire, and then (after Napoléon's defeat) goes back to being a monarchy. After another revolution, in 1848 France becomes a republic again. They elect Napoléon's nephew to be president... so guess what he does in 1851? How did they not see this coming??
To paraphrase Eddie Izzard: We have a new idea. Wait, it's the same idea, it's the same idea!
